DATA AS OF Tue 20 Oct 2026 NY close (07:00 AEDT Wed 21 Oct) · US cash closes are Reuters preliminary closes for Tue 20 Oct (S&P corroborated within 2 points by the settled SPY close); the AP tabulation was posted but could not be read at filing (KRMG fetch error, WTOP robots-blocked), so these are corroborated, not verified · official Treasury par curve to 19 Oct (verified; 20 Oct row posts ≈09:00 AEDT) · Fed pricing stamped "Oct 20, 2026 02:25PM EDT" (Investing.com Fed Rate Monitor; INTRADAY — the settled post-close read was not available at filing) · Brent Dec 19 Oct settle $109.55 (verified, Reuters; corrects No. 031's $109.42) · Brent Dec 20 Oct ≈$108.88 (Investing history row near settle time; second source not obtained) · FRED OAS to 19 Oct (IG, HY and CCC all posted) · OAT–Bund dedicated series to 19 Oct, 20 Oct derived from same-page vendor legs · RBA 4pm table 20 Oct (verified) · crypto ≈15:30 UTC Tue · AEDT = EDT + 15h

The bottom line

Six things before the open, in order of P&L relevance. What changed since Tuesday morning.
  1. Asia sold the AI-financing trade hard while New York rotated out of it: the KOSPI fell 3.73%, TOPIX 1.43% and the Hang Seng 1.3%, and in the US the Dow rose 1.05% and small caps about 1.7% while the Nasdaq was flat. Korea's slide came with SK hynix −4.2% (its lowest close since April), Samsung −3.0% and a 30%-plus fall in the debut of AI-infrastructure firm Elice (JoongAng, verified); in Tokyo SoftBank Group fell about 6% as its five-year CDS reached 432bp, the highest since 2022, and Resonac fell 11%. Hong Kong, back from its holiday, lost 1.3% with Lenovo −10%. Reuters' preliminary closes: S&P 500 7,714.52 (+23.79, +0.31%), Dow 52,513.98 (+547.95, +1.05%), Nasdaq Composite 26,421.84 (−0.03%); IWM rose 1.66%, putting the Russell 2000 near 2,774 (derived). Health care hit a sector record (Lilly, UnitedHealth, Merck, J&J, Amgen) and 3M, Northrop and Hasbro rose on results, while Meta, Netflix and Alphabet were among the weakest; read here as rotation out of AI-levered leadership rather than a broad sell-off. V031 (Nasdaq-100 put spread) marks ≈29,509 (QQQ −0.12% applied to Monday's ≈29,543), 1.10% against it since entry and 4.8% below its close line. Tesla, Meta, IBM, Texas Instruments and Lam Research report after tonight's close; Netflix fell 1.66% in the session and was down about 4.4% after hours at 16:04 ET (Yahoo Finance); its results were not obtainable at filing.
  2. CCC spreads made a new series high and every FRED credit series widened: IG 87bp, HY 329bp and CCC 1,310bp on 19 October, the first full set of prints since the 15th. CCC is 32bp wider in two observations and about 116bp wider since 6 October, above its previous 1,282bp high (FRED, verified). HY is 6bp wider at 329bp; IG 2bp wider at 87bp. The equity bounce on Monday did not reach the bottom of the capital structure. V017 (underweight HY/CCC, High) is working: its exit (CCC inside 1,050bp with IG unchanged or tighter) is 260bp away and its downgrade mirror (two HY prints below 305bp) 24bp away. The hike-sensitive, AI-levered end of credit is where the Fed's December pricing lands first.
  3. Oil whipsawed on the Gulf: Brent December traded up to about $112, a five-month high, on tanker and mine attacks, then gave it all back on a reported US–Iran compromise that Tehran's speaker denied. The IRGC said two tankers struck mines in the Strait; CENTCOM called the claims "false". Kpler counts at least 18 vessels fired on in two weeks and puts seven-day Hormuz flows near 8.5mb/d (Reuters via OilPrice, corroborated); IMF PortWatch logged four transits on 18 October against an 85-a-day baseline. The reversal came on an Israeli Channel 12 report of a Qatar- and Pakistan-brokered package (interest on about $6bn of Iranian funds, a confidential IAEA visit) that Washington approved and Tehran "preliminarily accepted"; Ghalibaf said reports of an imminent deal are wrong and Iran's "seven conditions" stand. Investing's December row has Tuesday at ≈$108.88 (−0.6%), range $105.96–111.96, stamped 14:37 ET near the ICE settle; a second source was not obtained, so it is unconfirmed. Monday's settle is corrected to $109.55 (Reuters, verified). V024's re-own band is about $19–20 below the market.
  4. France's spread kept widening on vendor prints, but the dedicated series has not broken its high: OAT–Bund about 150bp derived from Tuesday's same-page legs, 142.3bp on the dedicated series for 19 October. Bunds rallied 4.8bp to 3.417% on haven demand while OATs eased only 1.5bp to 4.916% (TE), a derived 149.9bp, and TE's own news item says "past 150bp, highest since the eurozone debt crisis". The dedicated ideal-investisseur series uses a lower OAT fix and printed 142.3bp for Monday, below its 146.9bp one-year high, so the high is not taken on the series we mark. Curfews are in place in several cities, a second national protest day is Saturday, and Moody's (Aa3 negative) reviews France late Friday Paris time. V025 is working and is not upgraded on a derived print.
  5. The UK labour market surprised hawkishly: unemployment fell to 4.7% against 4.9% expected and payrolls rose 13k, so sterling was the best G10 currency (+0.5%) and November is close to fully priced. Regular pay grew 3.7% and total pay 3.7% (ONS, verified); Greene said wage disinflation "appears to have stalled" above levels consistent with 2% (Newsquawk, single source). The dollar index fell 0.25% to 101.72, a three-week low (TE). UK CPI is at 17:00 AEDT today (consensus 3.4% y/y from 3.1%, core 2.8%), then Bailey at midnight; the BoE decides on 5 November with an MPR, and the Budget is 28 October.
  6. Australia: the ASX 200 fell 0.33% to 8,816.9 on BHP's copper miss and NAB's job cuts, AUD/NZD gave back 32 pips on the RBA table, and Hauser speaks at 08:45. BHP's September-quarter copper was 400.7kt, 19% lower than a year ago and below the ≈426kt expected; NAB plans up to 2,500 job cuts and a ≈A$300m charge (MT Newswires, Finimize). The November interbank future settled unchanged at 95.350, an implied ≈22–24% chance of a hike on 3 November (derived). On the RBA 4pm table AUD/USD rose to 0.6984 and AUD/NZD fell to 1.2302, 52 pips above V023's 1.2250 stop, with NZ CPI at 08:45 tomorrow (consensus 0.8% q/q). V006 is 2.1% in favour and 0.94% below its 8,900 close line. US housing was weak overnight: September starts 1.221m against 1.305m expected and pending home sales −7.3% to a record-low index (TheStreet, Investrade).

Overnight recap

Tuesday 20 October: Asia on AI-financing fears, Europe on French curfews and UK jobs, New York on housing and earnings. Chronological within region.

Asia-Pacific: the chip and AI-financing complex breaks lower

Australia. The ASX 200 closed 8,816.9 (−28.8, −0.33%) (MT Newswires via Yahoo; Finimize; corroborated, and it ties to Monday's 8,845.7), having been down as much as 1.11% intraday (Market Index live blog, dateline checked). Energy (≈−1.5%) and materials (≈−1.2%) led lower; financials −0.5%; health care +0.9% and staples, which touched their highest since April 2023, rose. BHP fell 1.6–2% on September-quarter copper of 400.7kt (−19% y/y, ≈426kt expected; Escondida weather and a fatal accident; FY27 guidance unchanged). NAB fell about 2% on plans for up to 2,500 job cuts (≈6% of staff) and a ≈A$300m pre-tax restructuring charge; Westpac fell 1.6% and CBA and ANZ 0.9% at midday. Corporate Travel jumped about 23% after IATA released a A$65m guarantee; Ingenia rose 8–9% on extended Warburg Pincus exclusivity at an indicative A$5.25; Cochlear rose more than 5% and HUB24 3.6%. The December SPI settled 8,834 (−26), range 8,764–8,858 (ASX EOD, verified). RBA Head of Payments Policy Connolly spoke on payments only (RBA transcript). ANZ-Roy Morgan consumer confidence fell 0.3 to 67.7.

Japan. The Nikkei fell about 1.3% to ≈64,053 (TE, single source; the official Nikkei archive had not posted 20 October at filing) and TOPIX 1.43% to 4,009.21 (Investing history, corroborated). AI-financing worries drove it: SoftBank Group −6% with its 5-year CDS at 432bp, the highest since 2022; Resonac −11%; Fujikura and Sumco about −7%; Tokyo Electron −2.6%; the megabanks fell 3.7–5%. Fast Retailing rose 2%. JGBs rallied: 10-year 2.90% (−1bp), 20-year 3.74% (−4bp) after a 20-year auction drew record demand, 30-year 3.94% (−5bp).

Korea, Taiwan, China and Hong Kong. The KOSPI fell 3.73% to 5,552.74 (JoongAng, verified), low 5,493.24; SK hynix −4.23%, Samsung Electronics −2.98%, Elice down more than 30% on its debut; foreigners sold ₩535.4bn; the won still firmed to about 1,328 per dollar. The TAIEX fell 1.13% to 46,292.93 (Focus Taiwan, verified). Hong Kong reopened after Chung Yeung and the Hang Seng fell 1.3% to ≈23,868 (TE; ties to Friday's 24,186.83), with Lenovo −10%, Z.AI −6.4%, Pop Mart −4.1%, SMIC −2.3%. On the mainland Shanghai rose 0.12% to ≈3,735.4 and the CSI 300 fell 0.54% to ≈4,152.1 (TE; ties to priors). The PBoC held the 1-year and 5-year LPRs at 3.00% and 3.50% for a 17th month (TE, financecalendar). India was closed for a holiday.

Europe: Bunds bid, French curfews, a hawkish UK jobs print

European equities slipped: the Stoxx 600 fell about 0.45% to ≈636.7 (TE; ties to Monday's 639.56; Investing showed 635.78 intraday) and the DAX was little changed at ≈25,304 (−0.06%, ties). CAC, FTSE, MIB and IBEX prints are TE CFDs that do not tie to the priors we carried, so we give direction only: the CAC about −0.2% to −0.7% and the FTSE about −0.3% (MarketScreener; TE). Industrials and chips led lower (Schneider and Siemens about −3.9%, ABB −4% after results, STMicro −2.8–3.2%, ASML −1 to −3%); Qiagen +5.4% and E.ON +2.9% rose. After the close Adidas raised its operating-profit guidance to about €2.5bn on a €1.01bn Q3 (€767.5m expected) and Carrefour cut its outlook, saying stores were looted in the unrest (Newsquawk, single source). Bunds rallied 4.8bp to 3.417%, OATs 1.5bp to 4.916%, BTPs 2.9bp to 4.543%, gilts about 2bp to ≈5.43% (TE).

Data. UK unemployment fell to 4.7% in the three months to August (consensus 4.9%), September flash payrolls +13k, regular and total pay 3.7% (ONS, verified; the consensus for regular pay differs across TE pages). Germany's ZEW fell to 28.1 from 34.7 (30 expected) and German PPI jumped to +6.7% y/y from 4.6% (+1.9% m/m), the highest in 3½ years (TE, corroborated). BoE's Greene said wage disinflation "appears to have stalled"; ECB's Rehn said higher long-term rates are dampening activity and inflation (Econostream).

France. PM Lecornu ordered curfews "where necessary" after a calm Monday night and promised a "massive" security operation for a second national protest day on Saturday 24 October; Interior Minister Nuñez admitted a "lack of anticipation" (Al Jazeera, LCP). Unions meet Lecornu today and parties on Thursday; they have not backed the protest call. The Assembly moved from the paused revenue bill to the social-security bill; an inquiry commission into the 17 October violence was approved.

United States: rotation into the Dow and small caps, a flat Nasdaq

Reuters' preliminary closes: S&P 500 7,714.52 (+23.79, +0.31%), Dow 52,513.98 (+547.95, +1.05%), Nasdaq Composite 26,421.84 (−9.05, −0.03%) (Reuters via Virginia Business and Invezz, 16:13 ET). Settled ETFs: SPY +0.33% (implying ≈7,716, within 2 points), QQQ −0.12%, IWM +1.66% (16:00 ET stamps, stockanalysis); DIA's page was stale at 15:15 ET. That puts the Nasdaq-100 at ≈29,509 and the Russell 2000 at ≈2,774 (both derived; ts2.tech has the Russell +1.8%). The AP tabulation was indexed at filing but could not be fetched, so these closes are corroborated, not verified, and will be corrected to AP on Thursday if they differ. Stocks opened lower and rallied as oil reversed. Health care made a sector record high (Eli Lilly about +5%, UnitedHealth, Merck, J&J, Amgen; Moderna highest since 2022). On results: 3M +5% (raised guidance, an expanded Amazon data-centre deal), Northrop +4%, RTX and GE Aerospace raised guidance, Hasbro +5% (outlook raised), Equifax rose, Halliburton +4%; GM fell about 5–6% on a full-year range below consensus and commodity-cost warnings. Braze jumped about 51% on Salesforce's $47.50-a-share cash bid (≈$5.66bn). Chip and AI names lagged early (CoreWeave −5%, Micron, Marvell and Arm about −3% at midday; Motley Fool) before partly recovering. Meta, Netflix and Alphabet were among the weakest large caps. Netflix closed −1.66% and traded about −4.4% after hours at 16:04 ET (Yahoo Finance); its results were not obtainable at filing. Gold spot was $4,122.70 at 15:09 ET (−0.4%; Kitco) and silver $57.73 (+1.3%).

Data and the Fed. September housing starts fell to 1.221m against 1.305m expected (prior revised to 1.288m; sources differ on −5.2% or −5.9% m/m); permits were 1.400m against 1.387m. Pending home sales fell 7.3% to a record-low index of 66.0, with all four regions lower (TheStreet, Investrade; corroborated). Atlanta Fed GDPNow is 3.5% for Q3. The Fed Rate Monitor at 14:25 ET (intraday) had October at 18.4%, unchanged, and at least one hike by 9 December at 86.9%, down from 91.1%; Kalshi and Polymarket had October at 12.5–13.5% (DeFiRate, 15:15 ET). BofA's economists still call an October hike. The official par curve for 19 October posted: 2-year 4.77%, 5-year 4.94%, 10-year 5.15%, 30-year 5.48%, so 5s30s was 54bp, unchanged, and 2s10s 38bp (Treasury, verified). Vendor 10-year prints on Tuesday were about 5.11–5.12% (−3bp; Investrade 10:28 ET, TE), so the long end gave back part of Monday's rise; the 20 October par row posts at about 09:00 AEDT.

Washington. Kalshi has Democrats about 90% for the House and 63% for the Senate (16 Oct). Twelve senators, six of them Republicans, asked Trump on 13 October to rescind the Russian diesel deal; no floor vote is scheduled (Reuters via KFGO). Treasury extended Lukoil's general licence to 25 April 2027 (The National). Government funding runs to 11 December.

Gulf, Russia and the rest

Gulf. The IRGC said two tankers hit mines and were ablaze and Fars reported a supertanker explosion; CENTCOM called the claims "false" and said the waterways were cleared (Newsquawk, Al Jazeera; the incident is unverified). UKMTO verified a tanker interdiction about 121nm east of Duqm, Oman (ABC). Saudi Arabia intercepted a Houthi ballistic missile aimed at Riyadh, and the UK is deploying RAF Typhoons to defend Saudi airspace in a defensive role (Al Jazeera, ABC). Pakistan's army chief presented a compromise in Tehran with Qatar and Russia also mediating; Ghalibaf said the US must meet Iran's "seven conditions" and that reports of an imminent deal are incorrect; Iran's foreign ministry says Hormuz would reopen on "day six" if they are met. Netanyahu said Iran may act through proxies within days; Kan reported that operations against Iran are likely to resume only after the Israeli and US elections. Rubio's claim that shipping is at "80–100% of pre-war" fails against every count we can read (PortWatch 4 transits on 18 Oct; Straits.live 115 vessels holding at 18:22 UTC Tuesday). Russia–Ukraine: Witkoff visits Russia today (TASS) and Politico reports a proposed Trump–Putin–Zelenskyy meeting; Zelenskyy says the US is pushing Ukraine to "capitulate"; Kyiv's energy grid was hit again. Elsewhere: China's Fifth Plenum runs 26–29 October.

This morning's setup

The SPI's December contract settled 8,834 in the day session, 17 points above the cash close, before New York's +0.3% and the Dow's 1% gain; no night-session print was obtainable at filing, so a steady-to-firmer local open is an inference, with miners exposed to copper and banks to NAB's read-across. AUD/USD is about 0.700. Hauser at 08:45 is the first event; Japan trade at 10:50; Bank Indonesia and UK CPI this evening; Tesla and Meta report at about 07:00 AEDT Thursday.

What is driving markets

Running themes updated, not rewritten. AI hardware and credit converge; the Fed theme is unchanged in substance.

1. Oil: the shipping war in the Gulf is widening faster than supply can respond

Tuesday ran the theme in both directions inside one session. The physical news was worse: IRGC claims of two tankers mined, a UKMTO-verified interdiction off Duqm, Kpler's count of at least 18 vessels fired on in two weeks, seven-day Hormuz flows near 8.5mb/d against more than 20mb/d a week earlier, and Houthi missiles aimed at Riyadh. Brent December reached about $112, its highest since May. The diplomatic news then took it back: an Israeli TV report of a Qatar- and Pakistan-brokered compromise, which Tehran's speaker denied within hours. Investing's December row puts the day's finish near $108.88, down 0.6%, on a $105.96–111.96 range; Monday's settle is now verified at $109.55. WTI November expired after touching about $110. The UK's deployment of Typhoons to Saudi airspace and Egypt's 26 October vote on military support show the Gulf war's footprint is still growing.

So whatV024 is unchanged: the residual call is deep in the money and the re-own band ($86.53–89.53 on December settles) is about $19–20 lower; we add no oil risk. A $6 intraday range on an unconfirmed report says the market is pricing a deal as possible but not likely, and Polymarket's 31 December Hormuz-deal contract (≈31% on Monday) is the cleaner read than the tape. Trust vessel counts over official claims.

2. AI hardware: from a de-rating in Asia to a leadership change in New York

Asia took the theme a step further on Tuesday. The KOSPI fell 3.7%, SK hynix closed at its lowest since April, and the debut of AI-infrastructure firm Elice lost more than 30%; in Tokyo SoftBank Group's CDS reached 432bp and the stock fell 6%. A reported OpenAI fundraising of about $30bn at a ≈$1.4tn valuation and CoreWeave's debt load were the named concerns (Investrade, single source). We read it as a financing de-rating rather than a demand one, because the falls were sharpest in the most levered names and in the newest issue. New York did not confirm it on Tuesday so much as rotate around it: the Nasdaq was flat and QQQ fell 0.12% while the Dow rose 1% and the Russell about 1.7%, health care set a sector record and Meta, Netflix and Alphabet lagged (Reuters).

So whatV031 marks ≈29,509, 1.10% against it since entry and 4.8% below the 30,932 close line. Leadership is moving away from AI hardware and platforms toward health care and small caps, which is what the hedge is for. The near tests are Tesla, Meta, IBM, Texas Instruments and Lam Research tonight (≈07:00 AEDT Thursday), then Microsoft, Alphabet and Meta's peers next week. Breadth is thin (51.8% of the S&P above its 200-day; historyofmarket) and the October FMS has tech at a net 37% overweight, the most since August 2020.

3. The Fed: the front end hands October back, and the long end rallies through hot data

Nothing in Tuesday's data argued for October. Housing starts missed by 84k, pending home sales hit a record-low index, and permits were flat; GDPNow is still 3.5% for Q3. The Fed Rate Monitor's 14:25 ET intraday read had October unchanged at 18.4% and at least one hike by 9 December at 86.9%, down from 91.1%; prediction markets put October at 12.5–13.5%. The official par curve for Monday confirmed a parallel rise (2-year +3bp, 5-year +5bp, 10-year +6bp, 30-year +5bp). Vendor 10-year yields eased about 3bp on Tuesday as oil reversed and Bunds rallied. BofA's economists still call October, against roughly a one-in-five market price.

So whatV030 is marked again: 54bp on Monday's par, unchanged and 4bp above the 50bp level that closes it on two consecutive par closes. Tuesday's par row (≈09:00 AEDT) is the next mark. The 20-year auction at 04:00 AEDT Thursday (prior 5.420%) is the one supply test in the blackout; a tail would favour the steepener, a strong result the opposite.

4. Credit: CCC keeps making highs while IG does not move

The title holds, with a qualification: IG has now moved too. FRED's first full set of prints since the 15th has CCC at 1,310bp on 19 October (1,297bp on the 16th), above the 1,282bp series high, HY at 329bp (331bp on the 16th) and IG at 87bp (85bp). That is CCC +32bp, HY +6bp and IG +3bp in two observations, a widening that steepens down the rating scale. The named stress is AI-linked: CoreWeave's 5-year CDS peaked above 1,140bp intraday on 15 October and its 2031 bonds yield about 16%; SoftBank's CDS reached 432bp on Tuesday. Monday's equity bounce did not reach credit.

So whatV017 stays at High and is working. The exit (CCC inside 1,050bp with IG unchanged or tighter) is 260bp away; the downgrade mirror (HY below 305bp on two FRED prints) is 24bp away. The 20 October observations post later today; a second CCC print above 1,300bp would confirm the break of the series high.

5. Australia: the neutral rate, not the jobs print, is now the RBA's argument

No new policy information on Tuesday: Connolly spoke on payments only, and the November interbank future settled unchanged at 95.350 (≈22–24%, derived), so Kent's reopening of November held. The domestic tape was about earnings: BHP's copper miss and NAB's restructuring took the index down, while AUD/USD rose 9 pips on the RBA table to 0.6984 and crossed 0.70 in New York as the dollar weakened. Hauser speaks at 08:45 today, the last Board appearance before the 3 November decision; Q3 CPI on 28 October (11:30) decides it. The big four are split: ANZ and Westpac call November; CBA calls it live; NAB has no firm call (The New Daily, 7–8 Oct).

So whatV023 (long AUD/NZD) gave back 32 pips to 1.2302 and is 52 pips above its stop before NZ CPI (08:45 Thursday; consensus 0.8% q/q, Westpac 0.7%, RBNZ 3.9% y/y). A hot NZ print is the main near risk. V006 (ASX underweight) improved to 2.1% in favour, 0.94% below the 8,900 close line.

6. France: unrest turns a budget problem into a spread problem

The government moved to security measures: curfews where needed, a "massive" operation for Saturday, an inquiry commission in the Assembly. The budget is paused on revenue while the social-security bill goes first (vote 27 October). On Tuesday Bunds rallied 4.8bp as a haven and OATs only 1.5bp, so the derived spread widened to about 150bp; TE's newsfeed called it the widest since the euro debt crisis. The series we mark is lower: the dedicated ideal-investisseur print for Monday is 142.3bp, below its 146.9bp one-year high, because it uses a lower OAT fix (4.85% vs TE's 4.93%). BTP–Bund is about 113bp, so contagion is limited. Moody's (Aa3 negative) reviews on Friday; a downgrade to A1 would align it with Fitch and S&P (A+).

So whatV025 (OAT–Bund widener, Med) is at its best derived level (≈150bp, ≈+56bp from entry) and its best dedicated mark (142.3bp). It is not upgraded: the ledger's rule is not to raise conviction at a range maximum on a derived print, and the dedicated series has not broken its high. Moody's is the event; an ECB backstop signal on 29 October is what would close it.

Fed. Tuesday's read (14:25 ET, intraday): October 81.6% hold / 18.4% hike, identical to Monday's intraday read, which may mean a sticky input; 9 December 13.1% at the current range, 71.5% one hike, 15.4% two. The settled read posts after 17:00 ET and was not available at filing. The Fed's calendar shows no releases from 15 to 30 October; the statement is 14:00 ET on 28 October with the press conference at 14:30 (Fed calendar, verified). BofA's economists keep October and December hikes in their forecast; Hartnett's 15 October Flow Show also assumes a 28 October hike.

RBA. Hauser speaks at Citi's Australia & New Zealand Investment Conference at 08:45 today, livestreamed (RBA Coming Up, verified; a third-party calendar's 09:30 is wrong). CBA calls it the chance to "fine tune the messaging" before November. Diary after that: Bullock's UNE graduation speech Friday (no livestream); Hunter on 60 Minutes Sunday 20:30; Jones Monday 26 October; Senate Estimates Wednesday 28 October 11:15; the decision, SMP and press conference 3 November 14:30/15:30; Hauser's Sir Leslie Melville Lecture 5 November.

BoE and ECB. The UK jobs print strengthened the case for 5 November: unemployment 4.7% against 4.9% expected, payrolls +13k, regular pay 3.7%. Greene: wage disinflation "appears to have stalled" (single source). ECB: Rehn (20 Oct) said rising long-term rates are hampering activity and inflation, a dovish lean; Econostream's tone meter still turned more hawkish; Moulin (16 Oct) said there is "no case" for bond-market intervention as French yields rose. Euro-area September HICP was 3.8%. The hold on 29 October is not in doubt; December is.

United States

Rotation, not risk-off. The Dow rose 1.05% and the Russell about 1.7% while the Nasdaq was flat (Reuters preliminary; IWM-derived); the S&P (+0.31% to 7,714.52) moved back above its 200-day (≈7,706) and SpotGamma's 7,690 risk pivot, still below the 100- and 50-day. Housing is the weak sector: starts 1.221m, pending sales −7.3% to a record-low index, 30-year mortgage average 6.86% in September. Earnings so far (FactSet, 16 Oct): 84% beat, blended Q3 EPS +29.0%, but the average surprise is only +2.6% against a +7.5% five-year norm. Tuesday's reports: RTX and GE Aerospace raised guidance, GM fell on a soft full-year range despite an EPS beat, 3M beat with an Amazon data-centre deal; Salesforce agreed to buy Braze for about $5.66bn. Tonight: Tesla, Meta, IBM, TXN, Lam, SAP; Thursday claims; Friday flash PMIs and UMich.

Euro area

Haven Bunds, weak Germany, French security. The Bund rallied 4.8bp to 3.417% while OATs lagged; the derived OAT–Bund is about 150bp. German ZEW fell to 28.1 (30 expected) and PPI jumped to 6.7% y/y, the highest in 3½ years, an awkward pair of growth-down, prices-up prints for the ECB. The Stoxx 600 slipped about 0.45%; Schneider, Siemens and ABB led industrials lower; Adidas raised guidance after the close and Carrefour cut its outlook on looting. Flash PMIs Friday (euro area 52.7 manufacturing / 52.6 services expected). Nagel speaks today at 18:15 AEDT.

United Kingdom

Jobs firm, CPI tonight. Unemployment 4.7% against 4.9% expected, payrolls +13k, pay 3.7%, vacancies 691k (ONS, verified). Sterling rose 0.5% to 1.3380; gilts rallied about 2bp with Bunds. CPI today 17:00 AEDT: 3.4% y/y expected (3.1% prior), core 2.8–2.7% (2.6%), services prior 3.4%. Bailey speaks Thursday 00:00 and 21:50 AEDT; retail sales Friday; the Budget Wednesday 28 October; the BoE on 5 November with an MPR. FTSE banks fell about 1%; Anglo American rose about 2% on diamond guidance.

Japan

SoftBank's credit is the story. The Nikkei fell about 1.3% (TE; official close not posted) and TOPIX 1.43% to 4,009.21; SoftBank Group −6% with its 5-year CDS at 432bp, the highest since 2022; megabanks −3.7% to −5%. JGBs rallied (20-year −4bp after record auction demand; 30-year 3.94%). USD/JPY eased to about 158.2, below 160, where intervention risk sits in our reading; no new MoF comment since Katayama's 15 October warning. Trade data at 10:50 today; national core CPI Friday 10:30 (2.1% expected after 1.7%); the BoJ decides on 30 October.

China & Hong Kong

Hong Kong catches up with the chip sell-off. The Hang Seng fell 1.3% to about 23,868 on reopening (Lenovo −10%, SMIC −2.3%, Tencent −1.8%); Shanghai edged up 0.12% while the CSI 300 lost 0.54%. The LPR was unchanged for a 17th month, which fits a Q3 GDP of 4.5% that reduces the urgency for easing. The fix was about 6.72, the strongest since February 2023 but still about 387 pips weak of estimates (TE; exact fix not obtained), so the PBoC is slowing, not stopping, yuan gains. The Fifth Plenum runs 26–29 October; no new US–China trade headlines were found.

Emerging Asia & LatAm

Korea gave back Monday's recovery and more. The KOSPI fell 3.73% with foreigners selling ₩535.4bn, though the won firmed to about 1,325–1,328 per dollar; the BoK decides tomorrow at 12:00 AEDT (hold ≈80% on a prediction market). Taiwan fell 1.13%. India was closed and reopens today with the RBI defending ≈95 per dollar (USD/INR 94.78). Bank Indonesia decides today at about 18:30 AEDT (hold expected). The peso was steady at 18.42. Brazil's presidential runoff is Sunday 25 October.

The RBA before Hauser

The cash rate is 4.60% after four hikes this year. Nothing new came from the RBA on Tuesday (Connolly on payments). Pricing held where Kent left it: the IB Nov-26 future settled 95.350, unchanged, an implied 4.65% November average, which we read as ≈22–24% of a hike on 3 November (derived; the Oct-26 contract at 95.405 implies 4.595%, so the base is close to the target). December 95.295 (4.705%), January 95.275, February 95.235: the strip prices about one hike by February. centralbank.watch's 19 October read is 17.1% for November and 49.1% cumulative by December; TE says "one in three". The big four, as at 7–8 October: ANZ and Westpac November to 4.85%; CBA November "live"; NAB peak 4.60%. Hauser's remarks at 08:45 are the last Board voice before Q3 CPI (28 October, 11:30) and the decision.

Monday's bids (Cleanaway, Challenger, FleetPartners) did not move further. Futures: December SPI settled 8,834 (−26), range 8,764–8,858, open interest 265,357 (+3,774) (ASX EOD, verified).

Rates and currency. ACGB 3-year 4.85%, 10-year 5.23%, 20-year 5.64%, 30-year 5.71% (TE); YT 95.145 (4.855%), XT 94.730 (5.27%), LT 94.355 (ASX EOD). Housing, commodities and the China link

Commodities: BHP's copper miss is supply-side (Escondida), and LME copper eased to $14,496/t on 19 October with stocks up 6,750t to 232,175t (Westmetall); TE attributes the softer tone to hopes the US drops its planned refined-copper tariff. Iron ore was $90.95 (19 Oct; TE), Dalian CNY685 (+0.37%); lithium carbonate fell to CNY102,350 (−24% over the month); uranium $90.10. Gold miners fell with spot gold (−0.4%). China: the LPR hold and Q3 GDP at 4.5% leave the stimulus impulse unchanged; the Fifth Plenum (26–29 Oct) is the next policy window. Housing: no new data on Tuesday; Ingenia's private-equity interest is the property-sector read.

New Zealand

The NZX 50 fell 0.15% to 13,631.69, with Westpac (−3.0%) and ANZ (−2.2%) lower. AUD/NZD 1.2302 on the RBA table implies NZD/USD of about 0.5677 on that basis. Q3 CPI tomorrow 08:45 AEDT: consensus 0.8% q/q after 1.5% (Metalsmine); Westpac 0.7% q/q and 3.7% y/y against the RBNZ's 3.9% (September MPS) and 4.1% prior, with core near the top of the band. Chief Economist Conway (19 Oct) called October "open" but said a higher OCR is the most likely next move. RBNZ 28 October 12:00 AEDT; pricing reads range from about 30% to 86% for +25bp across sources, so we print no single figure.

House views & tactical framework

Seven open. Nothing closed, no conviction changes. V030 is marked again on official par.

Nothing fired. Four views moved in favour and two against. V017 (credit) gained on the first full FRED set since the 15th, with CCC at a series high of 1,310bp. V025 (OAT–Bund) marked 142.3bp on the dedicated series (+4.9bp) and ≈149.9bp derived. V006 (ASX underweight) improved to 2.10% in favour as the index fell 0.33%. V031 (Nasdaq-100 hedge) marks ≈29,509, slightly better than Monday as the Nasdaq-100 eased 0.1%. V023 (AUD/NZD) lost 32 pips to 1.2302, 52 pips above its stop. V030 is marked again: 54bp on official par for 19 October, unchanged and 4bp above its stop. V024's underlying is ≈$108.88 (unconfirmed) after a verified $109.55 Monday settle.

Two conviction questions answered no. V017 is already at High; the CCC break of its series high strengthens it but there is no higher rating. V025 is not upgraded: the derived spread is about 150bp, but the dedicated series (142.3bp) has not broken its 146.9bp high and the ledger does not raise conviction on a derived print.

Portfolio-level read. The book is long the term premium (V030), long French fiscal stress (V025), short low-quality credit at High conviction (V017), underweight Australian equities and long AUD against NZD (V006, V023), with a residual oil call (V024) and a Nasdaq-100 put spread (V031). Tuesday paid the credit, France and ASX legs and cost the AUD/NZD leg 32 pips. The concentration is unchanged: V030, V031 and V017 are expressions of one risk, higher real rates squeezing long-duration and leveraged assets, and Tuesday showed the credit leg can work while the rates leg does not.

These are analytical framings for a professional reader; they are not personalised investment advice and carry no position sizing. The "what changes the view" column is the accountability mechanism; every view is logged and scored in the project's views ledger.

No new CFTC report until Saturday morning; the Nasdaq-100 positioning conflict is resolved.

CFTC data are futures-only positions as of Tuesday 13 October (released Friday 16 October). Longs and shorts are verified from cftc.gov; nets and weekly changes are this desk's arithmetic. TFF leveraged funds and legacy/managed-money series are never mixed.

Changes since Tuesday's edition: US Q3 GDP and September PCE are Thursday 29 October 23:30 AEDT (No. 031 printed Friday 30 ≈00:30); US existing home sales are not this week; flash PMIs confirmed for Friday 23 October; Moody's timing remains "after the Paris close". One third-party calendar lists Meta for 28 October; Meta's own IR page (No. 031, verified) says 21 October, which we keep. From 26 October Europe moves to CET (AEDT = GMT + 11h); from 2 November the US moves to EST (AEDT = EST + 16h).

Data notes & sources

What was verified, what conflicted, what was rejected, and what could not be obtained.

How this edition was built

Six research desks ran in parallel from about 06:10 AEDT Wednesday, while the US session was still open. Under the Tuesday–Friday protocol Asia, Australia and Europe were drafted first and the US-close block was fetched last. The AP tabulation for Tuesday was indexed at about 07:35 AEDT but its two syndication pages could not be read (KRMG fetch error; WTOP robots-blocked), so US cash closes are Reuters' preliminary closes (16:13 ET), corroborated by settled SPY (+0.33%, implying ≈7,716) and labelled corroborated rather than verified; the Nasdaq-100 and Russell are derived from settled QQQ and IWM closes. They will be checked against AP in Thursday's edition. The Fed Rate Monitor's latest read at filing is stamped "Oct 20, 2026 02:25PM EDT" (intraday) and is labelled as such. The official par row for 19 October posted overnight and marks V030; the 20 October row posts at about 09:00 AEDT. Every figure was retrieved on 20–21 October 2026 (AEDT); nothing is recalled.

Corrections and updates to No. 031

(1) MATERIAL — Brent December 19 October settle: No. 031 printed ≈$109.42 (Investing history row, labelled unconfirmed). Reuters (via Yahoo Finance, Nation Thailand and Business Today) has the settle at $109.55 (−$0.31); Friday's base is therefore $109.86. V024's mark and the weekly change are restated.
(2) WTI November 19 October settle: $103.66 (+$2.25), not found in No. 031; December $98.54.
(3) European priors: MarketScreener has Monday's official CAC close at 7,868.05, against No. 031's TE-CFD ≈7,843; the FTSE MIB and IBEX priors also fail to tie to Tuesday's TE pages. Those rows are shown as direction only today.
(4) Nasdaq-100 leveraged-fund conflict resolved: −11,593 is the E-mini NQ (209742) row and −21,891 the consolidated (20974+) row, which adds the micro at one-tenth weight. Both were right.
(5) US GDP and PCE date: Thursday 29 October 08:30 ET (23:30 AEDT), not Friday 30 ≈00:30 as listed in No. 031's calendar.
(6) Discharged from Tuesday's list: official par for 19 October (V030 marked 54bp); FRED HY and CCC for 16 and 19 October (V017); the OAT–Bund dedicated row for 19 October (142.3bp; high not taken); Brent December 19 October settle; RBA 4pm for 20 October; ASX close vs 8,900; the LPR. Not discharged: official par for 20 October; the AP tabulation for 20 October (not readable); Brent December 20 October settle from a second source; FRED for 20 October; Hauser's remarks (after filing).

Conflicts and how they were resolved

OAT–Bund: derived 149.9bp (TE same-page legs, 20 Oct) vs dedicated 142.3bp (19 Oct, lower OAT fix); the dedicated series is the mark and the derived figure is shown alongside. Hauser's time: RBA Coming Up 08:45 vs Myfxbook 09:30 (22:30 UTC); the RBA is used. Meta: one third-party calendar has 28 October; Meta IR (verified in No. 031) and Earnings Watcher have 21 October; 21 October is kept. RBA November: IB derivation ≈22–24% vs centralbank.watch 17.1% (19 Oct) vs TE "one in three"; the derivation is used. RBNZ: pricing reads from ≈30% to ≈86% across single sources; no figure printed. Housing starts m/m: −5.2% (TheStreet) vs −5.9% (Investrade) on different revisions; the level 1.221m is common to both. Nikkei: TE shows 64,053 and 64,075 on the same page; the official archive had not posted; ≈64,053 used and labelled. Shanghai: TE quote 3,735.37 vs a TE news item 3,733; the quote ties to the prior and is used. NZD/USD: TE page stuck on 19 October; only the RBA-basis implied 0.5677 is shown. Investing USD/JPY: stale (158.51, no move); TE used. US closes: Reuters preliminary S&P 7,714.52 vs SPY-derived ≈7,716 (agree within 2 points); a 24/7 Wall St ticker showing S&P 7,730.40 and Dow 52,496 is a futures/CFD quote and is rejected; Investrade's 10:28 ET S&P level (7,724) did not match its own change and is rejected. Netflix: results not found; only the after-hours price move is reported.
